RWRP Options for Middle Pickup:
The Nashville Paradox - Aficionados will know that it is not possible to have hum-cancelling in positions 2 & 4 (like a Strat) and have hum-cancelling with the Neck + Bridge pickups engaged (like a Tele).
You can get all the same sounds no matter what… We are only talking about the limitations of the hum-cancelling effect with two pickups engaged, at the same time.
Here are the options for our Nashville Panhandle set…
Option 1 - Standard wind middle pickup - This gives you hum-cancelling with:
Neck + Bridge (classic Tele)
Strat position 4 (Neck + Middle)
With this setup, you only sacrifice hum cancelling in Strat position 2 (Bridge + Middle). Keeping your classic Tele tones intact + some Strat-like Middle + Neck goodness. This setup is our favorite!
Option 2 - RWRP middle - This gives you hum-cancelling with:
Neck + Bridge (classic Tele)
Strat position 2 (Bridge + Middle)
With this option you lose hum-cancelling with Neck + Middle and gain hum-cancelling with Bridge + Middle.
If you want a classic Nashville Tele setup, this is the same as throwing a standard Strat Middle pickup into a standard Tele.
Option 3 - RWRP Middle with a new standard wind, standard polarity Neck pickup - Only available if ordering a full set.
You’ll get hum-cancelling in the following positions:
Hum-cancelling in Strat positions 2 & 4
No hum-cancelling with Neck + Bridge
This option gives you the standard hum-cancelling characteristics of a Strat rather than a traditional Tele.
How it all works with your selector switch…
A standard 5-way switch can be wired up to give you traditional Strat positions, but most players prefer to swap out position 3 (Middle only) for the classic Tele “Neck + Bridge” setup. You can also use a superswitch, toggle switch or Push/pull potentiometer to add in either the Neck or Bridge. There are many ways to wire a Nashville Tele!
What is RWRP?
Reverse Wind, Reverse Polarity means that we wind the copper coil of one pickup in the opposite direction to the other pickups in a guitar. When we do this, we also flip the polarity of the magnets on that pickup.
Two coils - one regular and the other RWRP is how a humbucker “bucks the hum” while staying in phase. Because a standard SSS Strat and a Nashville Tele both have three single coil pickups, we need to choose which of the 5 switch positions will include two coils of opposite wind-direction and magnet-polarity, to create the hum-cancelling effect.
